Objectives:

  • Understand and describe the pathophysiology of acute stress ulcer.
  • List the risk factors associated with the development of acute stress ulcer lesions.
  • Review the data regarding prophylactic therapy for stress ulcers and describe the deficiencies of the studies, and the benefits and risks ofH2 antagonists vs. antacids vs. sucralfate vs. miscellaneous agents.
  • Develop a therapeutic plan for prophylactic therapy of acute stress ulcers, including agent, dose, route, rationale for use, goals, desired outcome, monitoring parameters, and risks.
